90th Strategic Operations Task Force, Unified Operations Command Allied Forces

Unit History:

Originally conceived by Fleet Admiral Jacsen Quinn, the 90th Strategic Operations Task Force was intended to demonstrate a bold new initiative and method of operations for Starfleet as a whole. Originally modeled and field tested at the squadron level, the unit has since expanded its manpower and deployment capabilities to Task force levels, operating three numbered battle groups in addition to an attached Starfleet Marine Battalion. The Origin concepts came about as a result of repeated hostile incursions into Federation space, including three invasion attempts by the Borg, and a number of other hostile entities and political powers.

Quinn's plan, demonstrated a radical departure from Starfleet's prior exploration and scientific expansion, by method of deploying single ships on long term missions. In keeping with its Peacetime mandate of scientific exploration, the new task force would no longer deploy individual starships into the unknown. This new plan called for the organization of Survey Command, which would manage and train full time expeditionary units which could operate cohesively in unknown and potentially hostile territory without betraying the Federations core principles of Non-interference and peaceful coexistence. History has taught us that operations in such territories is not without risk, and should hostilities arise, it is imperative that warnings be carried back to the Federation and its allies. To this end, the new plan called for an additional facet of Starfleet, which would be organized as Battle Fleet. Essentially a dedicated combat oriented facet of the fleet which would function on a full time bases.

While Survey Command units would operate in a given area, the new model called for an escorting force from Battle Fleet to remain on hand and out of plan sight so as to not provoke misconception or misunderstanding by a potentially hostile force. Should Survey Command units come under hostile action, the battle fleet assets could then be called upon to assist and ensure the survey ships survival to alert Federation leadership.

With the onset of conflicts on multiple fronts, the 90th SOS was quickly re-tasked and deployed as an intelligence and military surveillance resource during the early stages of the recent Federation-Klingon war. Its unprecedented success allowed the unit additional funding and resources to expand, first to the level of Strategic Operations Group, and then to its current status as a full task force. During the recent Dominion crisis, forces from the 90 SOTF were instrumental in taking and holding Empok Nor as a secondary fallback position when joint forces moved to retake Deep Space Nine. The station was subsequently surrendered to the Dutapa Council in interest of supporting continued reform and restoration efforts by the legitimate Cardassian Government.

Additional operations include the deployment of units in support of the new Romulan Republic. This saw the 90th's latest expansion when the task force was called upon to assist with the establishment of Federation Embassies on Mol-Rehan. As a security contingent, Rear Admiral Nar'arwl Sunleaper filed petitions with Starfleet command to assign full time Marine units to the Embassy grounds as a show of force in support of the Federations new Republic allies. This action led to the 90th's acquisition of the 90th SOTF, 1st MACO EF.

This final addition to the task force's operational strength has solidified the unit as a cohesive and functional entity within the fleet. As such, the 90th now operates its own Command Star base, located near the Laurentian system in the Xerantine Expanse. Recent fleet reorganizations have required the task force's reassignment to the Unified Operations Command Allied Forces..
